Grand Plans

Today Makenna was with her dad for the afternoon, and after a failed shoe shopping attempt (for Declan), I rushed home with Mr. Crankypants and put him down for his nap. This rarely happens…but I found myself with some quiet, alone time during the day. Declan usually sleeps between 2-3 hours, so in my mind I was excitedly rubbing my hands together, thinking of the dozens of things I could get accomplished during this kid-free time.

The possibilities were endless…

  • Tidy up the ‘always there’ clutter at the end of the kitchen counter
  • Clean up Makenna’s craft corner
  • Wash Makenna’s bedding (love when she blasts through a pull up overnight.. ugh. Somebody night train this kid!)
  • Blog
  • Clean the bathroom
  • Get a quick HIIT session done on the treadmill
  • Eat lunch
  • Shower
  • Nap (hahaha)

I was rooting for 3 hours…but the little man woke up after 2. I’m not sure how they flew by so quickly (how can I still be surprised at how fast time goes by?!). Anyhooo.. I only made a small dent in my list; Makenna’s craft corner and a whole bunch of laundry. Ohhh…THE Craft Corner. The corner of crafts. The kid is in a serious phase of drawing, writing, crafting, painting, stickering (yes.. it’s such a thing when you’re 4 years old). Every day she makes dozens (dozens) of things (she has a gift bag full of ‘deliverables’ that has been sitting around for a while now – and growing! I must get her on the delivering side of things).

Paper of all colours, stickers, stamps, markers, tape, glue, envelopes (serious love of envelopes happening)…it all usually ends up in a giant heap of crafty hell. No matter how often I help to clean it up, or how often I encourage her to put things away as she goes…in no time at all it’s back to looking like this…

I know…bad. Something had to be done, I just wasn’t sure where to start, and she manages to pump out excessive craft quantities despite the mess and disorganization…do I really want to streamline her process? Regardless…something had to be done. Mama can only look at that for so long before exploding into a ‘MAKENNA YOU GOTTA CLEAN UP THAT CORNER!’.

With the craft connoisseur off the premises this afternoon…I purged a lot of stuff (really hoping she doesn’t peek into the recycling bin before I’m able to cover up the evidence). On that note….I’m not sure where she thinks it all goes. She also comes home from preschool every time with at least 5 or 6 things to add to the madness. I grabbed a few things from my room to help contain some of the supplies…and finally got it under some control…

Angels are singing: the stickers have a home.

I made these jars a couple years ago, when I was pregnant with Declan. A good way to recycle some glass jars, while keeping little craft bits somewhat organized.

Some of Makenna’s very first artwork from when she was about 18 months old.

Now let’s see if she remembers my strong suggestion that everything has a home and is to go back there once she’s done using it (a mom can dream, right?!).

If you’re keeping track…that’s right, the shower didn’t happen! Haha. Maybe tomorrow 😉

My babies…learning to ‘pull up’ at the same door.

About Tammy

I am a single mother to 2 wonderful children, ages 1 and 5. My youngest was surprisingly born with a rare genetic condition, achondroplasia, which is a type of dwarfism. This blog is a glimpse into my crazy life as I wade through figuring out dwarfism and divorce while enjoying every second of my deficient domestic bliss.

Wow! I really need to set something up for Cooper like that, it really is a 4 year old thing. Where is this little desk in your house and how do you keep D out of it? H would be ripping everything off the table in about 12 seconds!

My house has this weird room…when you come into the house (the entrance we use comes into the kitchen).. the kitchen is on the left and this big, open space is on the right. It’s a built-in cabinet thingy (good description.. right?!) along the one wall. I’ve only had to ‘baby proof’ to a certain height so far 😉 (though he’s pulling himself up on everything these days.. but is pretty good about not getting into too much trouble. Makenna keeps him in line too, haha). Anyhooo.. you should come see for yourself! Playdate! Maybe I’ll even invite that Jill lady and her crazy kids 😉

I’m in for that for sure! My wheels are really turning trying to figure out where I can make a space like it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Better kid proof before that Jill lady and her crazy kids come over. I hear the little one is hell on 2 feet 😉

LOVE what you did with the craft area! It looks so nice and pristine! I imagine it stayed that way for what, 10 minutes?

And the pics of the kids at the door made my heart stop for a moment 😀 I love that you have a story to tell them later in life and how life’s crappy circumstances have brought you back to this amazing place of love 🙂

You are definitely NOT JUST ANOTHER MOM! YOU ARE AMAZING!
I came across your blog by chance and am pleased I did. I cannot even describe how much you touched my heart. Big hug xx
